What's the difference in acoustic foam (used for soundproofing) vs. regular foam (such as egg crates)?

I'm looking for alternative/cheaper methods to soundproofing my home studio. I've heard that acoustic foam is different, but is regular foam really that ineffective?

Yup, one is made for the purpose of soundproofing while the other one is made as a container for eggs.
