Mine cost around $800, and I went pretty cheap, with some 2nd-hand stuff and marked-down clearance items.

I have a computer for the recorder, though.

You could get by with a 4-track Tascam tape recorder, like an PORTA-02-MK2 , or slightly older 414 MKII

Get Marshall MXL SP-01 microphones -- they are by far the best sound for the money ($40.00 from ProSound: www.pssl.com)

I find the best place is EBAY. As long as you research the product, see if its the right thing for you and wether the seller has a good reputation.

But another good tip is, try and find musicians and other bands. Ask them if they have and old equipment there willing to sell. They will usualy give you a VERY fair price and if your luck mabye even free! You may feel silly asking them, but believe me, you can find some brillian deals this way. I got 2 guitars and a Marshall amp this way.
