Cubase4 is excellent and recommended for many reasons. This software is very robust, designed with pro audio quality in mind, is very intuitive and is so powerful many pros use it, while it is affordable. I use N Track Studio and Quartz.
N Track costs 45 bucks, Quartz is free.
I actually use Qyartz more than Ntrack, but N Track has some effects I like better.
