what do you need for for a small home music studio?

Author: admin Category: Home Music Studio

i am trying to create my own music studio out of my bedroom what exactly would i need to do that besides a mic and drum kit??

It really depends what you’ll be recording.

But here’s a couple links:

http://www.wikihow.com/Build-a-Home-Studio-for-Computer-Based-Music-Recording

That tells you basically everthing you need.

I’m just finishing up on my simple home studio that i’ll use to record my solo project this summer.
Everything will be done by me.
I’ll be recording guitar, piano, and vocals.

Here’s what my home studio (in my bedroom as well) well be like.

I’m using a mac computer with garage band on it.
I’m using garage band and this thing (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/TA097LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3MA&mco=MTA4NDQwOTY) for the drum beats.
I have a condenser mic which i’ll be using for vocals.
To record the electric guitar, i’ll be plugging it straight into my mac using an amplifier capable and adapter.
So you can kinda see how i’m doing things based on what i’m recording.

hope all that helps a little.

recording a drum kit in a bedroom will sound like crap. only using one mic, it will sound worse. you will need a lot of sound treatment if you want a good sound. i would recommend at least two of the same mics to record, but more would be better. there will be so much sound bouncing off of the walls that it will come out poor. but if thats what you want to do, go for it. maybe you’ll find a sound that becomes a new standard. who knows?

what you need is an interface. the interface will connect your instruements and mics to your computer via USB or firewire. buying an interface will also contain the recording software you need to record and mix. the price of the interface will be determined by the size and brand. they will come with anyhwere from 1-24inputs (maybe more). if you only want to use one mic, you will only need one input. however if you want to use more mics, or record more items at once (such as a band with guitars and bass) than you will need inputs for those as well. if you want to expand your recording, you might want to invest in more inputs. keep in mind that when it comes to guitars and vocals, you can record them individually and then mix them all together, so you don’t have to have the inputs unless you want to record them all together.

outside of that you’d pretty much be set. if you already have a program like garageband, all you would need is a USB mic and you would be ready to go. but again, recording a kit with one mic in a bedroom is going to sound poor, so be prepared.

You will need a computer with a recording program. There are a few options to choose from, but I recommend a program called FL Studio. You can download the demo here: http://flstudio.image-line.com/ It will let you record music and producer your own original music on the computer.

If you like the program and want to buy the full version, here is a promo link that will give you a 10% discount: https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offer=Default&promo=EDAJCI416

Make sure to get the Producer Edition because it has all the features like live recording. Plus it comes with free lifetime updates for the software.

For hardware, I would recommend getting a mic that can be used for vocals or instruments. Also, a midi keyboard is very helpful when composing music on the computer.
