As David Blum ...
As David Blum states the starch is pulled from the corn, leavin behing the carbs and fiber, and protein for the animal feed, which makes for a more favorable food. Alcohol production should use a high sugar crop such as sugar beets and sugar cane. Apple trees have an excellent yield per acre.

If the fuel pump ...
If the fuel pump went bad it is because ethanol cleaned out the old gung that had built up in the tank from years of using gasoline. He most likely had not changed his fuel filter for years. Poor maintenance. What gaskets in the engine did it harm? I know people who have used E-85 for long time with no problems at all.

also be aware that ...
also be aware that you will need a different set of seals and engine hardware to run pure alcohol or E85 + a computer upgrade .My friend added a full tank of e85 and burned out the fuel pump and some gaskets in the engine with 1/2 tank

As the author ...
As the author points out corn is very mediocre starch source, but it's what's we have right now in abundance. A useful part of Blume's approach is the since the production would be so decentralized, each locality can ferment what is in abundance in their area. An example would be coastal kelp, fruit wastes down south, corn in the north; doughnuts whereever found, etc. Cheers!
