woah there! lol. S ...
woah there! lol. S/PDIF is 24 bit and up to 96K. 2 channels in and out simultaneously... but why would you need more unless you're tracking a drum set? And even if you were tracking drums, all the 002's ins and outs still work, but sound better as a result of clocking to the Rosetta. The 002 connects to the computer via firewire. The Rosetta connects to the 002 via S/PDIF. The software tells the 002 to clock to the Rosetta. Total ins/outs for me is 10, but I rarely use more than 4.

But isn't the max ...
But isn't the max resolution of s/pdif 20 bits? Wouldn't it be better to get a 24 bit recording and dither down to 16 bit later on. And how can you access pro tools if the digidesign 002 is not connected? Wait... how do you connect the 002 to the computer?

ADAT works for ...
ADAT works for 44.1Khz and 48K, but I do my work at 88.2Khz, so I have to connect to the Apogee via S/PDIF. In pro tools you can ign the hardware to clock to an external source. Sounds better than a Pro Tools HD 192 interface now!

Ya I hear Apogee ...
Ya I hear Apogee has great A/D converters. I'm thinking of getting the Apogee Ensemble. How do you clock to the rosetta? Through what cable? Adat? I don't really understand how the A/D stuff works.

Sansamp is OK, but ...
Sansamp is OK, but not tube. Dunlop M80 sounds a bit better IMHO. Neither are what I consider "studio" DI boxes, because both are active. Using a DI Box almost always requires the use of a preamp. Almost every preamp has a built in DI, although the built in DI's aren't always the best sounding even on high end pre's. Avalon's U5 is great, but I'm not a fan of its tone. Avalon preamps are very clean and nice sounding, but also over priced.

Thanks! Digi 002, ...
Thanks! Digi 002, but I modified it. Also, I clock to an Apogee Rosetta 200, using the apogee converters for AD/DA instead of the 002.

What do you think ...
What do you think of sansamp DIs? I just bought one and I think it's a tube DI but I could be wrong. Obviously it doesn't compare to a 1000 dollar DI. The only thing I need to clarify is that with instruments (bass and guitar), when you go directly in, there are no mic preamps involved. Of course, some mic preamps also have DI inputs for bass/guitar. Am I right? Last question: What about Avalon preamps/DIs?
