With Sonar you …
With Sonar you don’t need hardware. You can produce professional songs, with about $1,500 to $2,000 investment. A Sony Viao ($1,000), Sonar 8 Producer ($500), a USB microphone (about $100 if you want a good quality one for vocals). Yeah, the only reason I use a microphone is to record my vocals. The instrumental parts of the song I’d use Dimension Pro (ships with Sonar 8 producer) to create. But if you want live instruments recording, we’re talking big bucks. But why waste money? Right?

REAPER - maybe not …
REAPER - maybe not the best for MIDI centric recording now, the MIDI support is still good enough (getting better with every release). If you do downright music (rock, folk… whatever) then REAPER is good choice. You should buy it for $50 in 30 days, but no one will force you (but I bought it as I want it to progress). Community is great.
