Home music studio help?

Author: admin Category: Home Music Studio

ok i have a little music studio in my basement this is what i have pc,rokit 5 monitors,m-audio firewire solo recording interface & a dr-cx1 digital reference cardioid condenser mic & the recording program im useing is nuendo 2 i have a booth with rug all over the inside i get good sound but i wanna get better sound how can i do this on a very small budget any cheap tricks out there…….thx

That isn’t a lot of info to go on but I’ll give it a shot. First, lose that booth. Those things produce all kinds of crazy reflections and the carpet isn’t really very good for this kind of application. If possible, do the vocals in the middle of the largest space available. You should still "treat" some of the walls or the ceiling if the ceiling is low. Use Owens Corning 703. Wrap the panels in some fabric and tack them up to the wall. It is cheaper than auralex but works much much better.

Next, I don’t know much about the Digital Reference CX1 but that might be the next big fix. If you are doing aggressive rock/metal/screamo then consider switching to a dynamic microphone like a SM57, SM58, RE20, Senn 421. You can get right up on those and scream your brains out and they pretty much ignore the room or anything else going on. If rap is your cup of tea, consider using a Blue Dragonfly ($450 on Ebay) or a Rode K2 ($699 from sweetwater)

That is where I would start, the booth and microphone seem to be the two biggest issues.

Good Luck
