I always try to bypass the mixer if possible when tracking, unless it an SSL series or Neve console. Pods rules for recording, at least when it comes to practicality, mobility, and function.

I used to think the same thing and actually used to just build my own, like crazy AMD machines and overclock them and all that, but I got this Dell cheap and it has been working great and is very quiet. I have had a lot less problems with my dell than any other computer - which surprises me too.

true emu didnt make …
true emu didnt make it easy to use their patchmix….but they give u great possibilities that other souncard that cost twice dont give u! you have to test and read.i had an emu 0404 for 3 yaers had many problems…actually figuring how to route…and latency problem with cubase sx 3 or nuendo…but works great with reason and others

I agree with you …
I agree with you that Patchmix is too hard to set up -especially from scratch. ASIO drivers themselves are hard to figure out - I was trying to do this patchmix stuff with ASIO4ALL through a soundblaster. That was a nightmare. I actually found a template online (that is no longer there for some reason) that was set up how I needed it for the EMU. It was basically a MIDI and Audio recording template. It seems most sound cards are geared to gamers or sound engineers, not musicians…

I wouldn’t go as far as to say I hate it. The card does the job, which - in my case - is to input midi signals. But should it be so hard to set up ? I’m reading stories about people who spend a whole week trying to find the right configuration for Hauptwerk, whereas all they need is 3 midi channels. Once it works, Patchmix is ok. But the long road to get there …

I completely disagree with you. Patchmix is not a piece of crap, it is just hard to use at first. I use it almost exclusively to route signals and it works great. I don’t use any of its effects. As for the sound, it sounds as good as what you input. I use a pre-amp and have great tone.
Can you provide a solution that is anbetter alternative (besides your onboard Realtek)? It sounds like it is not set up right… You are the first person I have heard that hates it.

Although the card is OK and it comes with Vista64 drivers, the Patchmix software is the biggest piece of crap ever created. It turns the easiest tasks into a nightmare.
And as to sound quality : it performs worse than my onboard Realtek soundchip.

It is a smaller behringer mixer that I got on ebay for about 50 bucks. Eurorack 8 I think it works really well for the price.

I started with the soundblaster too. The hard part with me was to understand the Patchmix software. The preset I used was called e-wire. Anyway, the pod models guitar amps - however I usually only use the pre-amp setting with no effects for bass and guitar. I also use a lineout on my bass amp
