Equiptment checklist for a home recording studio?

I’m building a home recording studio and i just want to double check what equipment i need (any advice on which brand / setup to buy would be excellent), ive got instruments but so far i know i need:

- Computer (with good sound card / processor) ive used a mac at my old school but im a hardcore pc fan and i would prefer to use one as i completely understand them ha ha, the mac is all topsy turvy to me.

- Software (i bought cakewalk a while ago to use on a laptop but alas my lappie is nowhere near good enough to run it ha ha hence the studio) would anyone else recommend other software? i’ve seen acid/sound forge, cubase and logic pro 9 used professionally but is cakewalk as good as these or if not which is the best (is it purely personal taste or just what you have learnt with?)

- Monitor Speakers + Headset for playback whilst recording.

- Mixer Desk (i have one from my PA system but not sure it is good enough.)

- Microphone/s

- Leads (Jack + XLR)

- Soundproofing

I have an ideal budget of about £1000 but i can go over, please could you advise me which brand / make of each to get… i want the best standard possible at this sort of price. Thanks in advance. =)

The only thing missing is some type of USB or Firewire audio interface. That will take the place of the soundcard.

Your PA system mixer will probably work just fine as long as you know what you are doing.

Propellers that broke the sound barrier?

I once heard of an aircraft in which the propellers tips actually broke the sound barrier, and the noise was SO loud that it actually make the pilots physically ill. Does anyone know the name of this aircraft?

There are many aircraft where the airflow over the prop tips can exceed Mach 1 ("break the sound barrier") under certain conditions. It’s not terribly efficient, though, and not a normal operating condition.

Hi, my uncle passed away this month, and he has left me some money in his will.. so i used my budget to find some good studio equipment to buy.. here’s my list..
iMac 27′ i7 2.93GHz
Apogee Ensemble (interface)
Neumann U87AI (Mic)
Avalon VT-737SP (Preamp)
Avalon VT-747SP
Adam A8X (Monitors)
Monster Beats by Dre (headphones)
…… and i will have some money over to buy soundproofing for a vocal booth..
What do you guys think about this list?
Is there something i can do with or without?

You are going to spend a lot of money on equipment. If you get it all hooked up right and you are skilled and talented, you probably will get some good results. Your best investment will be to educate yourself on recording techniques. A skilled/educated engineer with average equipment can usually get better results than someone who "doesn’t know what they are doing" with the best equipment.

well i want to build my little home studio for myself. cheaper n better quality like mic some software and smth to convert or transmit my mic to my laptop. small studio. what do need to buy can u explain one by one plz. i have no nothing yet. start from beginning. tnx

It’s pretty easy to setup a home recording studio. You have two options. The long-expensive way and the simple and cheap way.

For the simple solution, I recommend a good USB condenser Microphone, and that’s all. One of the best on the market is Samson SAC01UPAK USB Microphone and Podcast Package (around $100):

What is the best USB microphone for a home music recording studio?

I need a USB mic for under of around $100. I don’t know if a need a condenser, dynamic, etc. I would use it for micing up my bass and guitar amps, acoustic guitar, vocals, and hopefully drums (I know you should mic each drum, but i dont have that kind of $$$). Any specific brands, models, kinds, advice??

i have a science fair project called the effect of different decibels on sound barriers. and i would like to know what items i can use as a sound barrier . Also i would like to know what instrument i can use to perform different decibels,

For sound attenuation, you want to have varying levels / layers of material to disrupt the sound waves as they hit. Example, take a bunch of empty egg cartons (or that foam mattress liner that has the same shape, etc).

Make a loud noise (Pop a large balloon, etc) in a room and it will reverberate back and forth between the walls. Now, do this in a room where the walls are padded or surrounded by these, and the noise is cut in half…

You can use cloth or curtains, bunch them up and staple to walls, etc. Just make sure it is not a flat surface, the more pits and valleys the better.

I’m watching TV shows online, but the video has a lot of noise. I don”t mean audio noise I mean video noise. It uses Flash Player to show the video, I was just wondering if there was a noise reduction filter I could download for Flash?

Good question. The 1st thing you need is a computer. Laptop or desktop will work. The faster it is, the better. Next you will need a music software. I recommend a program called FL Studio. Once you have the software, you might want to get a mic for vocals. They have some you can plug into usb ports. Also, it helps to get a midi keyboard to use with the music software. You can get these at local music equipment shops.
