First, a tailwind (or any wind) does not influence the Mach number, as the Mach number depends on the plane’s speed in relation to the air, [...]
It’s more for aesthetic reasons than anything else. It’s bad enough having a massive wall along side you, people don’t want to be hemmed in from above as well!

I think its the former as long as the aircraft maintains its supersonic speed. If multiple booms are heard then it must be because a single jet is decelerating and accelerating below and above the speed of sound.
Is that correct?
