What device could I use to measure sound for my science project?

Author: admin Category: 5

Is there a device that measures sound that I could use for my science project that is around $20 or less? I’m testing which materials make the best sound barrier.

You can make a simple device, that will help show sound waves. All you need is:
A can with the top, and bottom cut out of it.
A balloon.
A rubber band, string, or tape.
A mirror.
Some Glue.
Here is how to make it. Cut the Balloons mouth piece off, and stretch the Balloon over one end of the can, so that the Balloon is tight over the open end. Tape, or tie the Balloon in place with the Rubber Band, string, or tape. Glue the Mirror to the Balloon, (for a more dramatic effect, break the Mirror in to several pieces, and glue them to the Balloon). Stand near a window, so the Sun shines on the Mirror, or a light source, and let the light reflect on the wall. Speak in to the other end of the can, and the vibrations will make the tight Balloon vibrate, shaking the Mirrors reflection. Just put the different materials in to the can, and speak. By the way, a Vacuum is the best sound barrier. If you can put an Alarm Clock in one of those Vacuum bags (seal- a meal, etc.) Vacuum out the air, it will make no sound at all, even as the alarm is going off. Good luck.

An old microphone with the plug cut-off so you can attach the wires to a sensitive AC voltmeter.

mac mic.. you can find one that is really sensitive. hook that up to a volt meter on DC. (most of the computer ones you can get for 10 bucks)

The other thing you can do is in XP recorder you can see the peek out put.

If you are any good at programming you can record the sound both without the material and with the material and subtracts the peek out put and use that difference to determine what is the best.

the "great stuff" the liquid insulation at any home improvement store IS the best stuff for reducing sound.
