Space Shuttle Breaks Sound Barrier

Author: admin Category: 5

STS-115 Space Shuttle Atlantis blasts off from Kennedy Space Center Florida. Near the end of the clip you can see the vapor cloud as the shuttle breaks the sound barrier. This was shot by a good friend of mine, he was kind enough to get me that close to the pad, then run the camera as I watched.

EDIT: Yes, I know it’s a singularity cloud. We’ve been over this several times in the comments.

    You are actually …
You are actually correct. This is not a “sonic boom” but simply a small correction in the direction the shuttle was moving which caused a low pressure wave to develop, leading to condensation of humid air.

    Oh come on bkivie, …
Oh come on bkivie, just because you can’t hear it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. You can obviously see it break the sound barrier.

I’m sorry to inform you, but the average fighter jet engine puts off around 160 db noise. I’m sure that the rockets would drown out any sound of the sonic boom. Think boy, Think….

    U wot??? The speed …
U wot??? The speed of sound is approx 700 mph and the shuttle does a lot more than that.. To break gravity and get into orbit it needs to be doin around 17,000 mph so it actually does over 24 times the speed of sound before it even gets into space!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This has nothing to …
This has nothing to do with a sonic boom, and all to do with thermodynamics. Think humidity in the air and pressure changes. If it was a sonic boom you would have heard it. However…that IS a very rad polka tune!
