How do I build a sound barrier outdoors? Truck traffic is loud, and 100 feet from my property?

Author: admin Category: 5

I can’t build on the neighbors property, we are in a Historic District, which involves building restrictions. What can dampen, reduce the noise?

call the town you live in and see what they can do.. if they refuse to do anything, call the local news to see if they want to do a human interest story on the noise you have to put up with. you pay taxes and deserve to get some peace and quite. did you get a property tax discount for living there? i would venture to say NO, so if you can’t take care of it privately, then take care of it in the media

Pyramid cedars block out alot of noise once they have grown to a 5 foot height and you are legal.

You’ll have to complain to the town first. Then, you’ll have to get permission and build an "acoustical fence" (plans available everywhere). Usually, these fences are 12-14′ high and made from 6X6 posts and 2X6 boards. This may not be allowed in the area and thus the need to consult the town first. They may have a provision in their bylaws that if there’s a complaint either THEY pay for the fence or at least split the cost with you. Check it out.

There are some trees that grow rapidly and provide a sound barrier if you plant them close enough. Check with a local nursery. It will also provide some privacy and will probably be less costly than a wood fence.
