How can I minimize sound between walls in my home?

Author: admin Category: 5

I just moved into a condo and want to insulate my walls with some kind of sound barrier, without having to remove any drywall. I’ve heard of insulation being blown into walls, was wondering if there’s something similar that assists with sound?

There are various materials that can be injected into the walls , green glue or more insulator, as well as placed in between and outside the walls, MLV, special sheets of various material, extra drywall on top . I would advise to consult with professionals about this as I am not sure about the specifics relating to what’s behind your condo’s walls. Also know that if you are really determined to make it sound isolated it will be expensive. Now if you’re looking for some DIY I can point you towards some methods:

If you are concerned about neighbors being too noisy the best thing to do is report it. You shouldn’t have to suffer because of somebody else.

Any kind of apartment or condo should already have a "party wall". That is usually staggered studs that do not touch the other side, with insulation woven between the two rows of studs. Assuming you already have a part wall, the only suggestion I can offer is to make your walls more massive by adding another layer of dry wall. Be sure there are no construction mistakes that leave a hole for sound to pass around the barrier, and don’t forget the floor and ceiling.

Making the walls heavier will help. I suggest pouring sand into the wall cavities. This may void your warranty, or burst the drywall. And it might take a few pickup loads of sand to fill all the wall cavities. Perhaps it would be safer to just build a wall out of brick or cement blocks.

Or, forget about a subwoofer, and mount tactile transducers ("bass shakers" to chairs and sofas).

the best and easiest way to make your room soundproof is to buy some type of sound absorbing material this will look good and it absorbs sound very nicely its also not that costly and it is better than ripping your walls down. it will give your room a proffesional look and will lower the sound that will be heard in other rooms.
