That would be one of the rare exceptions. Intercept missions are expected to be on target within five minutes.

Normally it isn’t allowed over places where people live.
With the only exception of an emergency.
A few weeks ago 2 f-16 jets broke the sound barrier over one of the biggest city’s here where i live.
It was an intercept mission for a commercial jet who didn’t communicate with the traffic controllers.

There are a ton of airspace regulations on where an aircraft is allowed to break the sound barrier. The only place in the continental United States would be some of the training areas in the southwest. Otherwise, noise pollution and possible damage to property would be a problem.
