Are some models of Sony Alpha DSLRs better than other ones at noise reduction or are they all the same?

Author: admin Category: Noise Reduction

Please be easy on me if this is a dumb question. I’m just wondering if there are some Alpha models that are better than other ones at noise reduction. If there is such thing as that, please list some down for me. I greatly apprectiate your help. Thank you.

Actually there is little noise reduction on any DSLR, Sony or others.

Here is a link to all the current DSLR’s made

Here is a link that shows how all the current DSLR’s stack up to one another. Look at the Low-light ISO performance number. The higher the number, the better the noise/ISO ratio

As you will notice the best Sony camera comes in at number 9 and beats out one of the Hasselblad camera’s as well

out of Pace and Harmonics and Sound Barrier, which do you like more as a band name?

Author: admin Category: 5

We’re trying to decide on a name for my band. We’ve really already decided but I’d still like to know what people think. Sound Barrier may be spelled Sound Burier.

i like sound barrier the most. no,wait, never mind. i didnt see the 2 words in front of ‘pace’. i like ‘out of pace’ and ’sound barrier’. i guess, for me, it would depend on what kind of music you are to decide which one sounds better. if it’s ’sound burier’ then i probably like that one the most
‘harmonics’ doesnt really sound like a band name to me.

home music studio set up?

Author: admin Category: Home Music Studio

so im a producer and artist, and make beats on flstudio 9 mpc 1,000 and korg triton extreme 88key keybord on a imac ran with boot camp and windows xp. so im wanting to set up a home studio with a booth in my walk in closet(padded and all), protools and my imac(ran on the mac side of the computer). what stuff do you guys recommended me to get thats worth the price like mic pre amp the hole nine yards etc etc to set up a knockin home studio? also just a side note all the post production like mixing and mastering will be handled by my friend who went to full sail and did a internship with the clipse straight out of school for a little over a year so the post production will be professional industry ready from what ever stuff i record at the house with, and may even be ran through the ssl mixing bord were he works at now. reason i am telling you this is so you don’t tell me any thing that i need that has to do with mixing and mastering, and so what you guys recommend me can work great/make it easier for him with the post production.

It sounds like you already have a pretty good setup. All that is missing is a USB audio interface:

Home Recording Studio Set-up help?

Author: admin Category: Home Studio Soundproofing

Alright my friend and I are getting into building our own home studio and we could use a little help.

We already have the:
Blue Snowball USB Condenser Mic
Two Mac Laptops
Logic Studio Software
A USB desktop keyboard
A small room covered in soundproofing foam in which the mic is set up.
And guitars, ukes, pianos, etc.

The question is.. what do we do from here? We aren’t financially "inclined" so we are tight on money but we could always save up, but what for?

Do we need mixers, or these input 2 bus mixers, etc. and what for?

ANY TIPS on home recording are welcome also! Thank you!
Also will be need a "Sound card" … whatever that is?

It depends, what type of music are your trying to record? Are you doing a typical 4 piece band setup?

If you want to do anything more than simple mono tracking, you’re going to need an audio interface. This will allow you to plug a bunch of microphones into it at once and record them all (critical if you want a good drum sound)

There are quite a few options out there and most of them will run well with your Macs.

I’ve been recommending the new Tascam US-800:

It’s the best bang for your buck out there right now. With 6 mic inputs you can get a decent drum recording you just need to pick up a little drum mic pack like this:

What specific materials do i need to soundproof my home recording studio?

Author: admin Category: Home Studio Soundproofing

It all depends on your budget and how elaborate you want to get. Professional studios spend a lot of money on soundproofing.

There are two purpoese of soundproofing 1) to inside sounds from getting outside the studio 2) to keep outside sounds from entering the studio. Most studios try to accomplish both, since drums and loud amps can disturb neighbors at the musicians most creative moments, and nobody wants the sounds of yelling neighbors, sirens, pounding on doors, megaphones from angry cops, etc. from getting into recordings.

Seriously… A couple of cost-effective methods would work. There is the "building within a building" which works well. Build an actual room inside your garage using sheetrock on both sides of the walls with insulation in the center. This is fairly effective most of the time. To ensure that sound doesn’t make it through via "coupling," make 2×6 walls (using 2×6s at the ends) and stagger 2×4s with the studs in-between - using thicker insulation than as well. This method works wonders and is often used between apartments to block sounds.

Another way, is to double up on sheetrock, maybe putting some soft material in-between the layers.

Now the best (and most expensive) methods are using sound blocking and absorbing materials like auralex. There is this stuff called sheetbloc or something like that and it is supposed to have sound-blocking properties that exceed lead foil (which, by the way is excellent at blocking sound). I haven’t tried it because of cost.

Beyond that, I have heard of lots of creative ways to record. I’ve known people to use closets (full of clothes) as vocal booths. The bathroom is excellent for recording electric guitars because of the roomy sound. Full basements are naturally soundproof (except to the upstairs rooms). Don’t try egg cartons - they don’t work. Staggered random layers of wood is effective for cutting standing waves. Stacked cardboard works also, but then you have a fire hazard. Stay away from materials that are fire hazards. The list could go on. Personally I doubled up on my outside walls, using Hardirock on the outside layer of my studio. I have used office panels to absorb sounds inside the studio. You can usually find those at military or government surplus places and used office furniture stores (sometimes even at yard sales). Those do an excellent job. It’s all kind of hit or miss though. Good luck and have fun, but don’t expect it to sound like the pro studios. Those guys spend hundreds of thousands on soundproofing.

How would i make a simple but effective home music studio?

Author: admin Category: Home Music Studio

ive been writing songs and i wanna get to making them but
1. i dont know wat to buy to record it
2. i dont know how to record ne thing. like make the insrumental and then record, put the lyrics in, and have them in sync to be like an actual song

its all confusing to me. but it all comes to the main question to
how to i make a simple and cheap home music recording studio

This is a great time to begin a project like this. With just a computer and a few pieces of gear you can make a great sounding home recording.

What you’ll need:
- A computer
- Audio Interface
- Basic Recording Software
- Large Diaphragm Condenser Mic

Assuming you already have a home computer, I’d recommend starting with a PreSonus Audio Interface such as this one:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-INSPIRE-1394-FireWire-Audio-Interface?sku=241483

This gives you everything you need to get started with your recording including:
- phantom power supply (powers the condenser mic)
- microphone preamps (boosts the weak mic level signal)
- analog / digital converters (converts electrical mic signal to a digital form that computers can understand)
- basic recording software (for recording your tracks on the computer)

Moving on I’d go with a large diaphragm condenser mic for recording your guitar and vocals.
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-992-LargeDiaphragm-Condenser-Microphone?sku=273162

If your guitar has pickups, another inexpensive option is to use a Direct Box (also called a DI Box) and plug it directly into your Audio Interface.

This setup should get you started… as far as mixing and editing, you’ll likely need to upgrade to more powerful software suite such as Cakewalk Sonar, Pro Tools, or Studio Logic.

You definitely don’t need this to get started and you might be surprised how ‘final’ your raw recording sounds.

What is the right Noise Reduction Rate (NRR) for disposable ear plugs when shooting at the rang?

Author: admin Category: Noise Reduction

I am wondering what is the right Noise Reduction Rate (NRR) for shooting at the range. I’m trying to buy in bulk and found some decent deals but i need to know what to get. I keep hearing NRR32 is pretty good but i don’t know.

I just went through a bunch of this for some industrial hygiene training at work.

Most of the soft ear plugs will clip about 20dB… that will get you into a safe range with most common firearms.

do a google search for noise reduction or hearing conservation. I wont link you to any (searching is part of the fun) but you can find a whole lot of hearing conservation stuff… including how to rate and de- rate the products.

Is there something similar to the sound barrier at the speed of light?

Author: admin Category: 5

Were it possible to go faster than light-speed would you ride the crest of some kind of wave similar to that experienced at the sound barrier?

Well, the universe is expanding in which the velocity of 2 objects is proportional to Hubble’s Constant and the distance between the 2 objects. That means that things a certain distance from us are receding from us faster than light and their light will never reach us. Therefore, since light travels in all directions we can say that there is a light barrier in our universe. We call this Hubble’s radius or the visible universe.
